The food pantry is a joint Outreach Ministry between New Covenant United Methodist Church in The Villages, and the Wildwood United Methodist Church. There has been a faith based pantry operation in Wildwood for over 25 years. The Wildwood Food Pantry moved to its current home at Wildwood United Methodist Church in May, 2005.
In 2015 nearly 216,000 pounds of food was distributed to qualified needy families residing in Wildwood, Coleman, Oxford and other North Sumter County areas. Not only have our average number of families served increased, but the household sizes have increased also. As these numbers increase, our resources continue to be challenged.
Screening is done to determine eligibility for receiving food supplements. Recipient must be residents of North Sumter County. Also eligible are families who are already on food stamps, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI); Medicaid, or the income guidelines provided annually by the State of Florida for Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). Eligibility is reviewed at least annually.
There is no paid staff, but nearly 80 volunteers regularly provide support to the food pantry operation. Most of the volunteers come from New Covenant UMC and Wildwood UMC, with others coming from other area churches and the local community.
Days of Operation
Mass distributions are conducted on the first and third Fridays of each month, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon, however emergency food distribution can be arranged by calling the church office.
Eligible recipients can receive food supplements at each of the twice monthly distributions.
Regular ongoing food drives are conducted at Hope Lutheran Church, New Covenant UMC, Fairway Christian Church, United Church of Christ, Live Oaks Community Church, and Open Bible Evangelical Lutheran Church. The annual Seeds of Hope Food Drive held in The Villages area provides a great source of donated food and funds, and local clubs and businesses often collect food as part of their charitable outreach. Additionally, food is received from the USDA as a part of The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). The remainder of food needed is purchased from area food banks and local supermarkets.
Donations of nonperishable food are welcome at the Wildwood UMC Church Office, located on the corner of Curry Street and N. Old Wire Rd. (behind the church). They are also collected year-round at Hope Lutheran Church or New Covenant United Methodist Church (for most needed items, click HERE). Checks made out to the Wildwood Food Pantry can be mailed to:
